Silk Pillowcase: Proven Benefits for Skin and Hair

Silk is often talked about as a luxury. It is one — but it is also, and above all, a material that has a real effect on your skin and hair during the night. Here’s what a mulberry silk pillowcase really changes, without any exaggerated promises.

For the skin: less friction, more hydration

Cotton, a slightly rough and absorbent fiber, rubs against the skin and absorbs its moisture. Silk does the opposite. Its ultra-smooth surface reduces friction that causes “sleep lines” — those marks you wake up with that, over time, become permanent.

More importantly, silk absorbs only about 11% moisture: it doesn’t “suck up” your hydration or night treatments like cotton does. Creams and serums stay on your skin, where they need to work. Silk is also naturally thermoregulating and resistant to dust mites, making it a favorite for sensitive or reactive skin.

Good habit: even a silk pillowcase should be changed regularly. The material helps, but a clean pillowcase remains the foundation of clear skin.

For the hair: less breakage, fewer frizz

At night, your hair rubs against the pillow with every movement. On cotton, this friction causes knots, breakage, and static. On silk, the hair glides: less friction means less mechanical breakage, less frizz in the morning, and a hairstyle (or blowout) that lasts longer.

As with skin, silk’s low absorption preserves the hair fiber’s natural hydration — a real plus for dry, curly, or colored hair.

Where do these benefits come from?

Mulberry silk is made up of two main proteins, fibroin and sericin, and 18 amino acids. This natural, soft, and consistent structure explains its feel and behavior, so different from synthetic fibers. Be careful not to confuse real silk with polyester “satin”: only silk satin offers these properties.

Which silk to truly benefit?

All the benefits above assume quality silk with the right weight. For a pillowcase, aim for 22 momme (the bedding standard) in 100% mulberry silk. To understand momme weight in three minutes, read our momme guide.
