Not all "silk" pillowcases are created equal. Four criteria are enough to make a confident choice—and avoid the disappointment of silk that is too thin or poorly tailored.
1. The right momme
Momme measures the density of the silk. For a pillowcase, 22 momme is ideal: dense enough to last wash after wash, yet soft enough for that cool, smooth feel you want. 19 momme is a good first purchase, more affordable; 25 momme targets the most high-end bedrooms. Everything is detailed in our momme guide.
2. Fiber quality: 100% mulberry, grade 6A
Check for two labels. 100% mulberry silk guarantees the purest and most consistent origin. Grade 6A indicates the highest fiber quality: long, uniform, and free of impurities. High momme but poor fiber = a false bargain. The right approach is the trio of momme + grade + origin.
Don’t confuse: momme = density, grade = fiber quality, mulberry silk = origin. A beautiful pillowcase combines all three.
3. Closure and size
For closure, the invisible zipper holds the pillow well and offers a smooth, neat surface; the “envelope” opening is simpler but sometimes lets the pillow peek out. For size, measure your pillow: common sizes are 50×70 cm (rectangular) and 65×65 cm (square). A well-fitted pillowcase prevents wrinkles and unnecessary friction.
4. Care (even before buying)
Beautiful silk lasts for years if washed properly: delicate cycle at 30 °C in a mesh bag, gentle detergent, no tumble drying. If this routine suits you, silk is made for you. All details in our silk care guide.
In summary
For most sleepers: 22 momme pillowcase, 100% mulberry silk grade 6A, zip closure, size matched to your pillow. This is the standard we apply to our pillowcases.
