Silk panties: how to choose them (and what difference it makes) - StudioSoie

In short: the Studio's most requested silk piece this month is also the one we never show. Autumn has something to do with it. Here's what changes when the layer closest to your skin is silk, how to choose your silk briefs (cut, momme, finishing), and how to care for them in three steps.

There are pieces you choose to be seen. A scarf, a dress, the drape of a shirt. And then there is this one, which is never seen - yet still determines the mood of an entire day. For a long time, I considered it a detail. I changed my mind the day I realized it was the only piece in my wardrobe worn for fourteen hours straight, without interruption, against my skin.

The invisible layer

We always think from the outside in: the jacket, the sweater, the blouse. Silk works the other way around. Whatever touches the skin first sets the tone for everything else: the temperature you feel, the way the fabric glides or catches, what you forget or what you think about every twenty minutes.

Mulberry silk has a simple advantage here: it is a smooth, naturally hygroscopic protein fiber. Its moisture regain is around 11% of its weight, compared with approximately 0.4% for polyester. In everyday terms: it absorbs moisture instead of letting it stagnate, without creating that wet feeling.

Three things autumn suddenly makes visible

1. Knitwear, tights, and that little spark

At the end of September, we bring out the sweaters, tights, and lined skirts again. And with them comes static electricity: the skirt that clings, the tights that ride up, the shock when you touch a doorknob. The mechanism is the same as the one that makes hair staticky in autumn - dry air, friction, and fibers exchanging charges.

Fibers that retain a little moisture accumulate these charges less easily than very dry synthetics. A layer of silk against the skin does not eliminate the phenomenon - an acrylic sweater is still an acrylic sweater - but it removes one source of friction from the system. Over the course of an entire day, you notice it.

2. Lines under fitted clothing

Autumn is the season for straight-leg trousers, pencil skirts, and fine-knit dresses. Anything that hugs the body. And anything that reveals a seam, an elastic, or a hem. That's when finishing matters more than the fabric: a flat edge, a low-rise waistband without extra bulk, full coverage at the back. Beautiful silk with poor finishing will show just as much as low-grade cotton.

3. The wide gap between outdoors and heating

Twelve degrees outside, twenty-one in a heated office, and the reverse two hours later. The body spends its day adjusting. Fabrics that handle these transitions well are those that wick moisture away instead of retaining it - exactly where silk excels, and why it works so well in summer as well as under a coat.

How to choose: four criteria, no more

Criterion What to look for The Studio benchmark
Composition 100% mulberry silk, not “silk satin” or “blended silk” The word mulberry must appear in black and white
Momme The weight of the fabric - too heavy, and it loses its suppleness 16 to 19 momme for lingerie; save 22 for bedding
Cut Low rise or high rise, full back coverage or cheeky A low rise disappears best under fitted trousers
Finishes Flat seams, covered elastic, no extra bulk Run your finger along the edge: it should be smooth, not ribbed

Momme is the only unit that really matters when buying silk, and it is also the most poorly explained. If the term means nothing to you, start with our momme guide: ten minutes of reading that can save you years of imprecise purchases.

A word on sizing: silk does not stretch like cotton-elastane jersey. If you're hesitating between two sizes, choose the larger one. Silk underwear that is too tight loses precisely what you came for.

What science says - and what it doesn't

I prefer to be clear, because this subject attracts a lot of promises.

What is well documented is the general mechanism: the comfort of a garment worn next to the skin depends first on how it transports heat and moisture - a reference review on the subject was published by Islam, Golovin and Dolez in Textiles in 2023 (doi:10.3390/textiles3040024). Silk's properties - a smooth, hygroscopic, lightweight fibre - make it well suited to these criteria, and that is textile physics, not marketing.

What doesn't exist, however, is a serious clinical trial specifically on silk underwear. The benefits discussed here concern perceived comfort - softness, temperature regulation, and the absence of marks - not health. If you have a medical question, a healthcare professional is still the right person to consult: that is not a garment's role, and we will not claim otherwise.

Care, in three steps

  1. Wash in cold or lukewarm water, by hand or in a mesh bag in the machine, on a delicate cycle, using detergent without enzymes or bleach.
  2. Never wring. Press the garment between two towels to remove excess water.
  3. Lay flat to dry in the shade. Never use a dryer, never place it on a radiator - this is what wears silk out fastest.

Three pieces in rotation are enough to get through a week without thinking about it, which is precisely why multipacks exist. For details on temperatures, detergents, and mistakes to avoid, everything is covered in our silk care guide.

Frequently asked questions

What momme weight should you choose for silk panties?

Between 16 and 19 momme. Below that, the fabric lacks structure and shows wear quickly; above that, it becomes too stiff for a piece that should fit close to the body. 22 momme and above is best reserved for bedding.

Can a silk panty be machine-washed?

Yes, in a mesh laundry bag, on a delicate cycle, in cold water or at 30 °C, with a mild detergent. Air-drying flat in the shade is non-negotiable: it's the dryer, not the washing machine, that damages silk.

Does silk show under fitted pants?

The cut and finishing details make the difference, not the fiber. Low-rise underwear with flat seams disappears under fitted pants; a style with exposed elastic will show, whatever the material.

How long does a silk panty last?

Several years if it's washed cold and laid flat to dry, and only a few months if it goes in the dryer. A silk garment's lifespan depends more on its care than its price.

Silk or satin: what's the difference for lingerie?

"Satin" refers to a weave, not a material: satin can be made from polyester. Mulberry silk is a natural fiber. For a piece worn all day against the skin, the difference in breathability is real.

Where to start

If you've never tried one, take just one, wear it on an ordinary day - not an exceptional one - and see whether you think about it again that evening. It's the best test I know. Our full selection can be found in the Women's Lingerie collection, from single pieces to packs of three to make it part of your everyday routine.

Luxury is sometimes simply what we forget to wear.
